Tradition and modernity. Culture as a meeting place

Proud of the past with an eye to the future: From 16 to 20 October 2024, Italy will be the Guest of Honour at the International Frankfurt Book Fair. The last time this was the case was in 1988. At that time, being the guest country represented the culmination of a golden era in Italian literature.

Looking back on its glorious past, but equally determined to always look forward, Italy is once again preparing to become a host country, with a motto that represents the secret of its success: “Roots in the future”.

The 76th Frankfurter Buchmesse (16–20 October 2024) will put a spotlight on current topics in the world of international publishing and on today’s socio-political issues. At the same time, it is expanding the venues that allow readers and authors to interact – with an emphasis this year on the growing desire younger readers have to engage with literature.

Italy Guest of Honour 1988-2024: A Journey Through Time

The year was 1988. The Frankfurt Book Fair was set to introduce the innovative concept of the "Guest of Honour Country", an initiative created to make the event more dynamic and engaging, extending its impact beyond the confines of the exhibition halls, and inviting the entire city to participate in a series of events that aimed to engage a broader audience than industry professionals alone.
