In a career spanning fifty years, Lorenzo Mattotti has frequently pushed the boundaries of illustration, intertwining it with the classics of literature (both on paper and in film, as seen in the animated adaptation of Buzzati's The Bears’ Famous Invasion of Sicily. He has adorned the covers of prestigious international magazines and has merged his art with the stories, rhythms and movements that were the focus of his recent retrospective exhibition in Brescia. Of a later generation, Alessandro Sanna has continued in a similar vein, reinterpreting the works of Rodari and Calvino, engaging with music (as seen in the book Crescendo, accompanied by compositions from jazz musician Paolo Fresu), and illustrating the covers of major magazines as well as the pages of books. His work reconnects with his roots, exemplified by the forthcoming Saltafossi, set for release this autumn. These two figures are leading voices in Italian illustration, each exploring the diverse potentials of language, expression and storytelling.
