Encounter and surprise, the concept of “piazza” will represent Italy at the 2024 Frankfurt Book Fair

A place of identity par excellence, the concept of the piazza will inspire the Studio Boeri's team to represent Italy's presence in Frankfurt in 2024.

The leitmotif of the Italian presence at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2024 will be the piazza, a symbol of urban planning but also of the Italian society. 'As one of Italy's most identifiable places and spaces,' comments the architect Stefano Boeri, who has been entrusted with the design of the Italian pavilion, 'we are thinking about the piazza in Italy's historical centres for the development of the Italian pavilion’.

‘A place’, continues Boeri, 'of relationships and encounters, generous for the activities that take place there and also unpredictable for what could happen there'. It is therefore ideal to take the visitor on a discovery of new Italian publications and more broadly of the Italian culture as a whole. A place in which the past - the “roots” - and the future cohabit to surprise the visitor and invite him to discover and experience the Italy of yesterday and that of tomorrow.

Italy Guest of Honour 1988-2024: A Journey Through Time

The year was 1988. The Frankfurt Book Fair was set to introduce the innovative concept of the "Guest of Honour Country", an initiative created to make the event more dynamic and engaging, extending its impact beyond the confines of the exhibition halls, and inviting the entire city to participate in a series of events that aimed to engage a broader audience than industry professionals alone.

Music is literature of the heart, it is stenography of the emotions, say poets. Music and literature have come together since the beginning of our tradition: from classical poems to medieval ballads to the grand opera season, Italy has been the cradle of the world’s music culture.
