Frankfurt Book Fair 2023 – Italy's journey towards 2024 begins

Destination Frankfurt. Italy's journey towards 2024 began today, with the press conference on the morning of the first official day of the 2023 Frankfurt Book Fair: an event during which Italy presented the motto, the logo and the video that will mark its participation as Guest of Honour at the 76th edition of 2024.

The Italian participation is clearly visible even during the present edition: the posters along the treadmills inform visitors where the Italian stand is located, the "stand" already being a small city, made up of different stands, with 142 Italian exhibitors present in total. Everyone is preparing for next year

“We are preparing with great care our participation which will be plural and tending to represent Italian culture in all its declinations”, as expressed by the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano in his greeting, read to the public by Incoronata Boccia - Deputy Director of Tg1 RAI during the press conference for the presentation of the motto and logo of Italy Guest of Honour 2024.

Over 80 thousand titles are published in Italy every year, explains Innocenzo Cipolletta, president of the Italian Publishers Association (AIE), during the press conference. Italian publishing is in fact among the largest in Europe in terms of turnover - fourth in terms of value of sales (3,388 million euros) after Germany, Great Britain and France. Italy has therefore set itself an ambitious goal as Guest of Honour: “In short, we will present not only Italy but Italy and Italians, because if it is true that they say that physically we are what we eat, it is also true that intellectually we are the books we have read”.

Italy Guest of Honour 1988-2024: A Journey Through Time

The year was 1988. The Frankfurt Book Fair was set to introduce the innovative concept of the "Guest of Honour Country", an initiative created to make the event more dynamic and engaging, extending its impact beyond the confines of the exhibition halls, and inviting the entire city to participate in a series of events that aimed to engage a broader audience than industry professionals alone.
