The ministers discussed how Italy's participation as Guest of Honour at this year’s book fair in Frankfurt could be an opportunity to strengthen the cultural cooperation between the two countries. “This is a strategic opportunity to support the internationalisation of our publishing industry,” said Minister Gennaro Sangiuliano at the meeting.

The Minister further added: “In response to the title of this edition 'Roots in the Future', we will focus together with Commissioner Mauro Mazza on our national literary production that reflects the richness and plurality of our cultural heritage and gives a strong voice to new literary trends. [...] In 2024, the Italian participation at the Frankfurt Book Fair offers an exceptional opportunity to promote Italian literature and culture in Germany. We want to make the best of it.”

Other cultural representatives were also present, such as the Secretary of State for Culture, Gianmarco Mazzi, the Minister's Chief of Staff, Francesco Gilioli, the Italian Ambassador in Berlin, Armando Varricchio, the Minister's Diplomatic Advisor, Clemente Contestabile, and the General Director of Museums, Massimo Osanna.

Italy Guest of Honour 1988-2024: A Journey Through Time

The year was 1988. The Frankfurt Book Fair was set to introduce the innovative concept of the "Guest of Honour Country", an initiative created to make the event more dynamic and engaging, extending its impact beyond the confines of the exhibition halls, and inviting the entire city to participate in a series of events that aimed to engage a broader audience than industry professionals alone.
